Competition of Law Articles

The Georgian-Norwegian Rule of Law Association in cooperation with the Association of Law Firms of Georgia proudly presents the competition of law articles for law students.

ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to law students who, at the date the entry is submitted, attend the last course of bachelor’s study or studying on master in accredited law school.

TOPIC: The articles shall correspond to the recent debates in Georgia and provide overview of the important legal developments pertaining to the rule of law, human rights & democracy, free market economy, Europeanization of the legal culture & legal education, and the approximation with the European Union. The following topics can serve as examples: Comparative legal analysis of tax agreements with current European legislation; Competition restrictions and respective comparative analysis of European and domestic legislation; The Effects of Decriminalization of drug Use in Georgia; The comparative analysis of current Estonian income tax model with other European tax policy models.

JUDGING: A winning entries will contain an original discussion of the selected topic, will be substantively accurate and supported by citations, concise, well-reasoned, and clearly written. The Association reserves the right not to award a prize if, in the judgment of the judging panel, no entry meets these conditions. The decision of the judging panel is final.

PRIZE:

  • First place 2000 GEL prize. In addition, the winner will take part in a guest lecture that will be held in November 2018 in Oslo (Norway). The winner shall present it’s article during the guest lecture at Oslo University. All approved expenses, related with travel, will be covered by the Association. The Association takes no responsibility for visa application process;
  • Second Place 1600 GEL prize;
  • Third Place 1200 GEL prize.

Cash prize includes tax payments envisaged by Georgian legislation.

In addition ALFG grants the winners at least 3 month internship at the leading law firms listed below. Specific place of the internship will be determined by the judging panel taking into account relevance between the winner article and the scope of work of the law firm.

1. Law firm – BLB ( ALFG member BLB – for more than 20 years, the Business Legal Bureau (BLB) has been one of the most widely recognized legal names in Georgia making it the oldest local law firm specializing in all areas of business law. Among the clients of BLB are major local and international companies, financial institutions and wealthy individual investors involved in large cross-border transactions and investment projects. Goal of BLB is to be the law firm of choice for clients with respect to their most significant business transactions, their most challenging legal issues, and the most critical disputes they face. BLB has a long-standing association with the UK law Firm Tulloch & Co, Solicitors, London, that enables our team to advise clients on international business transactions as governed by UK law.)

2. Law firm – BDO. ( ALFG member BDO is one of the leading global accounting and consulting organisations uniquely built to provide the absolute highest standards of service and a collaborative culture that values all of its relationships. Since 1999 BDO is one of the largest accountancy firms in Georgian market, which incorporate more than 200 professionals. BDO Georgia’s service lines are: Audit & Assurance, Tax, Outsourcing, Business Advisory, Legal, BDO Solutions and BDO Academy. BDO’s team looks for innovative ways to help company’s clients maximise growth opportunities, improve processes and avoid pitfalls.

3. Law firm – Chargeishvili Law Inn. (ALFG member, Chargeishvili Law Inn is a law firm incorporated in Georgia providing legal assistance to individuals and corporations, nongovernmental and international organizations, financial institutions. Service of the inn is equally available and comfortable as for large as well as for medium-sized and small business. Inn doesn’t offer clients to solve the disputes only directly through the court, first of all they focus on preventing legal problem. In case of dispute they study the problem, try to involve in negotiations, understand their opponent’s arguments, they offer mediation and peaceful resolution of disputes.)

At the discretion of the Association, the winning entries as well as other entries may be selected for publication in association’s periodic review “Georgian Law Journal”, subject to editing. Should the Section be unable to locate the winner within 30 days of the award decision, the prize is forfeited and an alternative winner may be selected.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION: Only original and unpublished papers are eligible. Papers prepared for law school credit are eligible provided they are the entrant’s original work. Jointly authored papers are not eligible. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to have their work reviewed and critiqued by a faculty member or practicing lawyer, although the submission must be the student’s own work product. A student may submit only one entry per contest year.

An article of approximately 3,000 words shall be submitted to the Association by e-mail at contact@genolaw.org no later than 10 October 2018. Entries shall indicate in subject line: competition of law articles 2018. Submitted articles shall comply with the following submission guidelines:

WORD LIMIT: Articles should not exceed 3,000 words, including footnotes, abstract and author details.


STYLE GUIDELINES

FORMAT: All articles shall be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
LANGUAGE: English
FONT: Times New Roman, 12 point, double-line spaced for the body text and 10 point, single-line spaced for the footnotes.

HEADINGS: Please indicate the level of the section headings in your article:

  • First-level headings (e.g. Introduction, Conclusion) should be in bold, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns. First-level headings should be numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.
  • Second-level headings should be in bold italics, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns. Second-level headings should be numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.
  • Third-level headings should be in italics, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns. Third-level headings should be numbered 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, etc.

References: Please use the Oxford referencing style for any references. Examples may be found here. Please place references in footnotes.

AUTHOR DETAILS: Please include all authors’ full names, academic degrees, affiliations and email addresses.

ABSTRACT: Please include an abstract of no more than 300 words. Some tips for writing an abstract may be found here.

SUBMISSION: Two title pages are required.

The first title page must include:
(1) title of paper
(2) last four (4) digits of author’s ID number
(3) author’s name
(4) telephone number, mailing address, and e-mail address
(5) name of law school
(6) year of expected graduation

The second title page should include only:
(1) title
(2) last four (4) digits of the author’s Social Security (ID) number.
